The argument of whether video games are legitimate forms of art, has been ongoing for years, with neither side gaining any real traction. However, with the Smithsonian American Art Museum's "Art of Video Games" exhibition this year, and now the first ever video game soundtrack nominated for a Grammy, it seems the tides are shifting.
The hauntingly beautiful soundtrack, composed by Austin Wintory, reached the top 10 of the iTunes Soundtrack Charts in more than 20 countries, and was arranged by Wintory to stand alone as an album without needing the context of the player's actions to make sense. The soundtrack features heavily on the cello and other strings and can be listened to, in its entirety, on this youtube playlist.

Wintory will be against some stiff competition, facing the likes of veterans such as John Williams for "The Adventures of Tin Tin", Ludovic Bource for "The Artist", Hans Zimmer for "The Dark Knight Rises", Howard Shore for "Hugo", and Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross (who won the Oscar for Best Original Score for "The Social Network" back in 2011) for "The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo".
